#33 Fatima

Posted by Jane Lancaster on April 30, 2011

one of the little girls at the school today Fatima. she told me that the way to remember her name is to think of her as fat like her name and shrugged like and hadn’t she heard that joke a million times before..she’s cute and stocky with jet black shiny hair in her glaring pink t-shirt with nerdy written on it. she waved to me when i first got there i like her. they had made puppets in class inspired by some children’s poems and today was supposed to be rehearsal for a performance.  as usual the hour was insufferable mainly due to Destiny who acts like a rap star all the time and just won’t play and looks sideways at you with angry eyes.  but i couldn’t get over Fatima’s puppet piece.  a bath made out of a box.  she’d painted it pale pink.  it had a faucet and out of the faucet she’d hung dark blue velvet pipe cleaners with white feathers stuck to the ends for the running water and in the bottom of the bath was a blue plastic bag for the bath water.  it was incredible … perhaps i shouldn’t have but i whispered in her ear that her’s was the best and we hugged as i left ..
